FM:Open
FM:Open
The public domain equivalent for music.
FM:Open is the most permissive tier. There are no restrictions on how the music can be used — remix it, sample it, redistribute it, use it commercially. Anything goes.
What’s Allowed
Section titled “What’s Allowed”- Remix, sample, and create derivative works
- Redistribute the full track
- Full stems available (if provided by the artist)
- Commercial use — sell derivatives, use in monetized content, sync license
- No attribution required
No Modifiers
Section titled “No Modifiers”FM:Open always stands alone. No modifiers can be added. If you want to add requirements like credit or royalties, use FM:Remix instead.
This is intentional — FM:Open means zero friction, zero strings attached. It’s the simplest possible license.
When to Use FM:Open
Section titled “When to Use FM:Open”- You want maximum distribution with zero friction
- You’re sharing music specifically to be used, remixed, and built upon without any conditions
- You’re contributing to the commons — loops, stems, experimental pieces, sketches
- You don’t care about credit (though people may still credit you — it’s just not required)
Real-World Examples
Section titled “Real-World Examples”- A producer shares an experimental ambient piece they want the community to freely build on
- A sound designer releases a drum kit for anyone to use in any context
- An artist shares stems from an older track to see what the community creates
- A DJ releases an edit pack for the community with no strings attached
