What is FreeMix?
FreeMix is a new kind of music platform built for producers, djs, labels, and fans to monetize and share their tracks, stems, and samples with other music creators. Think of it as Bandcamp reimagined remix culture. Artists are in control of how their music can be used with clear, purpose-built licenses that fit how music is made today. Other creators can find tracks and stems to remix and build on, and creators can earn royalties for their work. FreeMix is built on AT Protocol, the same open, decentralized protocol behind Bluesky, the foundation of a new open web.
Built for Remix Culture
Section titled “Built for Remix Culture”At its core, FreeMix is about enabling creative collaboration. People upload tracks, stems, and samples, then set their price and terms that define exactly how others can use their work. Others remix, sample, and build on that material. Every derivative links back to its source through the Remix Tree, creating a visual lineage of how music evolves. Through the Royalty Cascade, creators can earn a share of the revenue not only from sales of their own tracks, but also from any remixes, mashups, or edits they inspire.
The Value of Music

FreeMix is music-first with no algorithm, no advertising — designed to give artists control over how their music is presented and used. By leveraging the decentralized nature of the ATmosphere, we wanted to create a new kind of music platform that is more equitable, more sustainable, and more inclusive than the current status quo. The FreeMix License Framework
Section titled “The FreeMix License Framework”After looking at the state music licensing, we quickly realized that existing licenses were not adequate for the needs of the music industry as it stands today. We wanted to take a different approach that keeps artists in control of how their music is presented and used.
The FreeMix License Framework includes six license tiers designed specifically for music workflows:
- FM:OPEN — Public domain equivalent. Anything goes.
- FM:REMIX — Remix and sample freely, with optional modifiers for credit, royalties, and more.
- FM:NC — Non-commercial use only.
- FM:STEMS — Individual stems available, full track protected.
- FM:DJ — DJ edits and public performance allowed.
- FM:SAMPLES — Creative building blocks with zero royalties.
Five optional modifiers let you fine-tune your license: Credit, Mix, Royalty, ShareAlike, and NoAI.

Built on AT Protocol
Section titled “Built on AT Protocol”FreeMix is built on AT Protocol — the same open, decentralized protocol behind Bluesky. This means:
- Your identity is portable. Your account isn’t locked to FreeMix. You can move it to another provider at any time.
- Your data belongs to you. Your tracks, stems, profiles, and social connections are stored in an open format on a Personal Data Server (PDS). You can choose to store your data on FreeMix or on another provider, or migrate your data at any time. If FreeMix goes away, your data is still yours.
- No walled gardens. FreeMix content is visible to any application on the AT Protocol network. Your music has reach beyond a single platform.
If you already have a Bluesky account, you can sign into FreeMix with it right now — no new account needed. Or you can create a new FreeMix account. FreeMix automatically imports your display name, avatar, and bio as defaults from Bluesky — you can customize everything for FreeMix independently. If you created a new FreeMix account, your profile starts fresh. You can have a separate account for FreeMix and for Bluesky, or you can use the same account for both.
We’re excited about AT Protocol and the future of the open web. We hope FreeMix will be one part of a growing network of open, community-minded music platforms that are built on the same foundations.
The Remix Tree
Section titled “The Remix Tree”The Remix Tree is one of the most important features of FreeMix. Every remix on FreeMix links back to its source. When someone remixes your track, and then someone remixes that remix, you get a remix tree — a visual map of how a piece of music has branched and evolved through the community.
Attribution is automatic and as new remixes are created, they added as a new node on the tree. You can refocus the tree on any node and go up or down branches to see how the music has evolved.
No Ads. No Algorithms. Music First.
Section titled “No Ads. No Algorithms. Music First.”It was important for FreeMix to be music-first which means the tracks are the stars of the show here. There’s no algorithmic feed optimizing for engagement, no ads, no pay-to-play promotion, and everything is free to use.
The flow is simple: you upload your tracks, stems, and samples, set your price and terms, and others can create something new. And then the cycle begins again.
Current Status
Section titled “Current Status”FreeMix is now fully out of beta — anyone can create an account. Paid downloads and royalties are also live, for buyers worldwide. The platform itself is free to use, with Pro/Plus/Studio plans for creators who need more storage and tools.
