License a Track for Remixing

The situation: You’ve produced a track and want the FreeMix community to remix it. You want credit, and you’d like a cut if their remix earns money commercially.

  1. Upload your track with stems and/or samples. Sharing stems and samples makes it much easier for remixers to work with your source material — they can isolate the parts they want. See Uploading Tracks for the full upload walkthrough.

  2. Choose FM:Remix as your license tier. This gives others permission to remix, sample, and create derivative works, including for commercial release.

  3. Add the Credit modifier. This requires anyone who remixes your track to credit you in their work.

  4. Set a price. This is the price to purchase your bundled track, stems, and samples. If you don’t set a price, it’s free to remix. See Pricing & Earnings.

  5. Set a Royalty rate (optional). If you want to earn a percentage of commercial sales of remixes, set a royalty between 1–50%. A common starting point is 10–15%. See Setting a Royalty Rate.

  6. Set Modifiers (optional). If you want to add additional requirements, like Credit, ShareAlike, and NoAI, add them here. See License Modifiers.

  7. Consider ShareAlike (optional). If you want remixes of your track to also carry a FreeMix license — keeping derivatives in the ecosystem — add the ShareAlike modifier. It’s a lock nobody downstream can remove, and the one term that reaches off-platform: a downstream work stays licensed even when it’s released somewhere else, like Bandcamp or SoundCloud.

    To go further, add ShareAlike With Stems — this obliges remixers to share their stems too, so the stems keep cycling downstream. You can only elect it if your own upload includes stems (attached or generated); you can’t require what you didn’t give. The option stays hidden until your upload has stems.

  8. Your final license: Displayed as a string: FM:Remix · Credit · Royalty(15%) · ShareAlike — or whatever combination fits your goals.

  9. Publish and share. Your music is ready for sale. Cross-post to Bluesky to let your followers know your track is available for remixing.

The Result

Your license string is FM:Remix · Credit · Royalty(15%) · ShareAlike. This means:

  • Anyone can remix your track
  • They must credit you
  • You get 15% of any commercial sales of their remix
  • Their remix must also carry a FreeMix license
