The Remix Tree

The remix tree is FreeMix’s visualization of how a track has been remixed, sampled, and built upon over time. Every track on FreeMix can have a remix tree — starting from the original as the root, with branches for each derivative.

The tree can go multiple levels deep: Original → Remix → Remix of the Remix → Mashup of Two Remixes. Each connection is a recorded attribution.

Each node in the remix tree represents a track, showing:

  • Cover art, title, and artist
  • BPM, key, and license badge
  • The relationship type connecting it to its parent (Remix, Sample, Mashup, Edit)

The focal track (the one you’re currently viewing) is highlighted in the center. Ancestors (source tracks) appear on one side; descendants (derivatives) on the other.

Click any node to re-center the tree on that track and explore its lineage further.

  • On any track detail page, if the track has remix activity, you’ll see a “View Remix Tree” link
  • The track detail page also shows a “Remix of” section (linking to source tracks) and a “Remixes” section (listing derivatives)

Transparent provenance — Everyone can see who influenced what. There’s no ambiguity about where a sound came from.

Credit where it’s due — The original artist is always visible in the chain, no matter how many generations deep the tree grows.

Discovery — Find new music by exploring the branches of tracks you already love. If you liked the original, you might love the remix. If you liked the remix, check out what the remixer made next.

Creative ecosystem — The tree grows as more artists contribute. Every remix, sample, and mashup makes the platform richer for everyone.
