Uploading Remixes

When you upload a remix (or any derivative work), FreeMix lets you link it to the original track it’s based on. This creates an attribution chain — a transparent record of who used what, under which license. Your remix appears in the original track’s remix tree, showing the creative lineage.

  1. Choose “Remix” from the upload type selector.

  2. Search for the source track. Type the title or artist name to find the FreeMix track you remixed. You can link multiple sources (up to 10) — useful for mashups or tracks that sample from several sources.

  3. Set the relationship type for each source — Remix, Sample, Mashup, or Edit. This describes how you used the source material.

  4. Describe what you used (optional). Note which elements you incorporated — “vocal hook,” “drum pattern,” “bass line.” This helps the original artist and future listeners understand the creative connection.

  5. Add your audio file and fill in metadata, just like a regular track upload. See Uploading Tracks for details on metadata fields.

  6. Choose a license. Your remix’s license must be compatible with the source’s license. If the source uses the ShareAlike modifier, your remix must carry the same or more restrictive FreeMix license tier. The license selector will show you which options are available.

  7. Review and publish. The review screen shows your remix and its source track(s) with relationship badges.

  • Your remix appears in the source track’s “Remixes” section
  • It’s added to the remix tree, visible from any track in the chain
  • The attribution record is permanent — stored on the open protocol, not just in FreeMix’s database
TypeWhat it means
RemixA substantially new arrangement using the source material
SampleA portion of the source is incorporated into a new composition
MashupTwo or more source tracks combined into a new work
EditA modification preserving the original’s structure (extended intro, instrumental, etc.)
